Need
a job, but you’re not up for the hassle of looking through the papers?
Well then, you could always set up a nice site and have people suggest
the best jobs around. Throw in a free iPod nano and you’re set. Just
like Belgium-based Tijs Vrolix did. Quite an innovative way of getting
the [...]

The
Design Observer has reprinted an article by Michael McDonough, called
“The Top 10 Things They Never Taught Me in Design School“. Michael goes
in to some uncomfortable truths surrounding design work, clears up
myths and misconceptions and gives some rock solid, slam-hard advice.
He produces valuable insight for each of the following points: Talent
is one-third [...]

Designing
a small niche online shop can offer you, as a designer, a lot more
creative freedom than an behemoth site such as Amazon ever could. You
are creating a design for a fairly defined target group, in contrast to
a neutral one-size-fits-all solution that needs to work for anyone of
any age group. Let’s [...]

It
appears that both Mac and PC TrueType versions of Erik Spiekermann’s FF
Meta Book and FF Meta Bold are being freely delivered along with the
official Second Life client. The fonts’ .ttf files can be copied and
used without system restrictions. This begs the question whether the
font was intended for free distribution among currently [...]

The
SXSW (”South By Southwest Festivals”) has announced this year’s Web
Awards Finalists. Go have a look, some pretty impressive stuff there.
Personally, I’m not surprised ISO50 by Scott Hansen has received an
award. Great site, great design, great (self-produced) music, one of my
favorites. Congrats!
(Thanks, neckCNS)

Here’s
a quick little something you may not have known about CSS borders.
The border shorthand can be used without providing a color value. This
is completely valid CSS: border: 1px solid; Now that’s not so
interesting in itself, right? What makes this interesting is the fact
that when you don’t provide a border color value, it inherits [...]

I
think for most of us screen-only designers, CMYK and all the color
management considerations surrounding print are a world of complex
mysteries. Knowing this from experience, Dave Shea (creator of the
famous CSS Zen Garden) has written up a good CMYK / Spot Color primer
tailored for our peculiar species. Also read the comments, [...]

I
usually try not to have two videos on the front page at the same time,
but this one I just couldn’t leave out. Quoteth Phil Hansen: 30
different people that influenced my life were painted one on top of
another on my torso. I either painted a picture of the person or an
object that [...]

Jarratt
Moody has put together a nice little experiment in typography.
“Say What Again” merges the audio of a scene in the movie “Pulp
Fiction” with rapidly animated words, capturing the momentum of the
scene perfectly and giving it a little extra kick. Contains profanity,
for those concerned. (YouTube direct link)
Here’s another take on the scene.

The
gradient mesh tool is one of the most powerful and yet least used tools
in Adobe Illustrator. Care to see what it is capable of? Basang
Panaginip has put together an impressive collection of some of the most
realistic vector art around, along with the respective outlines. Makes
you want to crack your knuckles [...]

In
an interview with CNET, Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen announced that Adobe
will be taking Photoshop online. The web-based client will be a limited
version of Photoshop and ad-supported, similar to their online video
editor Adobe Remix, a simple version of Premier Elements that will be
provided freely to Photobucket users. The new client is [...]
